Sarrancolin marble, also known as Empire, is a French natural stone celebrated for its striking multicolour palette. The stone presents a base of variegated gray interlaced with pink and gold flecks, while some slabs reveal vivid red areas crossed by violet and yellow veins, offering a dynamic visual effect. Its fine to medium grain and subtle translucency make it suitable for both polished and honed finishes, ideal for flooring, wall cladding, countertops, and high‑end interior design projects. Marmi di Carrara supplies Sarrancolin in blocks and 2‑3 cm thick slabs, cut‑to‑size, with verified photographs of each slab before purchase.

Petrographic description

Sarrancolin: complete guide

Overview

Sarrancolin is a brecciated marble from the French Pyrenees, with red, grey and yellow fragments. It is a historic material of great decorative effect, chosen for prestigious projects.

History and origin

It takes its name from Sarrancolin, a village in the French Pyrenees, and is one of the best-known French marbles of the classical age. It was historically used in residences and palaces for columns, pillars, fireplaces and cladding. Today it is a rare material, available in limited quantities. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Appearance

The surface is a breccia of red, grey, yellow and white fragments of various sizes, bound by light veins. Each slab has a unique pattern, with strong variability in colours and fragment size. Polishing makes the colours brilliant and highlights the brecciated texture.

Uses

Recommended for fireplaces, columns, inlays, furniture tops, cladding and restoration. Excellent for small, high-value surfaces. Not suitable for exteriors, kitchens or high-traffic floors.

Care and maintenance

Clean only with neutral products and soft cloths. Absolutely avoid acids and abrasives. A wax for polished marble maintains the shine.
