Black Galaxy Granite: the complete guide
Overview
Black Galaxy Granite is a black Indian stone speckled with golden crystals reminiscent of a starry sky. It is chosen for elegant tops and floors that are very durable and easy to maintain.
History and origin
It comes from southern India and has for decades been one of the most exported blacks in the world. Geologically it is a basic rock, akin to a gabbro, which the trade calls granite. The bright specks are crystals of iron- and magnesium-rich minerals with metallic reflections. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Appearance
The deep black background is speckled with small gold, bronze or copper-coloured crystals, more or less densely distributed. The density of the specks varies between batches and is the main selection criterion. Polished, it enhances the sparkle; honed, it tones down the reflections and gives a more matt black.
Uses
Ideal for kitchen worktops, bathrooms, floors, stairs and cladding, including outdoors. Widely used in hotels and shops for its resistance to heavy traffic.
Care and maintenance
Water and a neutral detergent are all it needs; having low absorption, it does not require frequent treatments. Dry polished surfaces to avoid smears.
