Rouge Griotte: complete guide
Overview
Rouge Griotte is a historic French marble in a deep cherry red, dotted with light patches of fossil origin. It is chosen above all for restoration and prestigious decoration, where an authentic antique red is needed.
History and origin
The name comes from the griotte, the morello cherry, because of its colour. It is a very old nodular limestone from the south of France, used for centuries in altars, fireplaces, columns and inlays in European churches and palaces. Today quarrying is very limited and the material available is scarce, often coming from stocks or salvage. Marmi di Carrara can check its availability on request.
Appearance
The background is dark red verging on burgundy, with lighter or greyish oval patches linked to fossil remains and fine white calcite veins. The pattern is irregular and every piece is different. Polishing gives depth and brilliance to the red, which is the traditional way it is presented.
Uses
Today it is used mainly in the restoration of historic works, for inlays, pietra dura work, fireplaces, small tops and decorative cladding. It is not recommended for kitchens or exteriors, where it would lose its polish and colour. Given its scarcity, large slabs for extensive floors are rarely found.
Care and maintenance
Clean only with neutral detergents made for marble. Avoid any acidic product or limescale remover. On historic pieces it is best to rely on restorers for cleaning and re-polishing.
