Bardiglio Costa: complete guide

Overview

Bardiglio Costa is a grey marble from the Apuan area, with dark veins running across a fairly uniform background. It is a sober choice, valued for floors and stairs because its colour hides wear well.

History and origin

It belongs to the Bardiglio family, grey marbles long quarried in the Tuscan district and used in architecture both on their own and alongside whites. The trade name identifies a specific origin, with its own character of colour and pattern. It is a material that suits interventions on historic buildings as well as contemporary interiors. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.

Appearance

The grey background, of varying intensity, is crossed by dark veins, sometimes almost black, and by fine light veins. The pattern tends to develop in a linear fashion, but can vary between slabs from the same block. Polishing intensifies the grey and the contrast; a honed finish gives a more uniform, modern effect.

Uses

Excellent for floors, steps, thresholds and interior cladding, including in public spaces with a honed finish. Not recommended for heavily used kitchen worktops if you want to avoid dull marks appearing.

Care and maintenance

Wash with pH-neutral detergents and dry. On stairs and high-traffic floors a honed finish is easier to maintain; any scratches can be reduced with professional honing.
