Verde Gressoney: complete guide
Overview
Verde Gressoney is a dark green stone from the Aosta Valley, crossed by light veins and sold among the green marbles. It is chosen for the intensity of its colour and its elegant, deep appearance.
History and origin
It comes from the Gressoney valley area in the Aosta Valley Alps, where serpentinite-type green rocks outcrop. Like other Alpine greens it is called marble in the trade, although its composition differs from that of calcitic marbles. It is used for floors, cladding, furnishings and decorative elements. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Appearance
The dark green background, almost black in places, is crossed by irregular light veins, white or pale green. The colour and density of the veins vary considerably between slabs. Polished, it takes on a deep, glossy appearance; honed, it looks softer and matt.
Uses
Recommended for floors, stairs, cladding, bathroom tops, fireplaces and furnishings. For exteriors and kitchen worktops it should be assessed case by case; for laying tiles and thin slabs, rapid-setting or reactive adhesives are recommended, because some green stones can warp with slow-curing adhesives.
Care and maintenance
Clean with neutral detergents and dry. A protective treatment enlivens the colour and limits stains; avoid acidic products, which can etch the carbonate veins.
