Serizzo Ghiandone: complete guide
Overview
Serizzo Ghiandone is a grey Alpine stone characterised by large light crystals known as "ghiande" (acorns) or eyes. It is chosen for its robustness and for a traditional look closely linked to the architecture of northern Italy.
History and origin
It comes from the Alpine valleys of the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy, where these granitoid and gneissic rocks have long been quarried and worked. The name Ghiandone derives precisely from its large acorn-shaped feldspar crystals. It has been widely used for paving, thresholds, stairs, kerbs and cladding, especially in Lombardy. Marmi di Carrara supplies it on request.
Appearance
The grey background is studded with large white feldspar crystals, often elongated and oriented, set in a finer matrix with dark mica. The pattern can be more or less oriented depending on the cut and varies between slabs. Flaming enhances its rustic character, while honing and polishing make the light eyes more visible.
Uses
It is highly suitable for outdoor paving, stairs, thresholds, window sills, kerbs and cladding. Indoors it is used for floors, stairs and worktops with a rustic look. Its large-crystal pattern makes it less suitable where a uniform, minimal effect is sought.
Care and maintenance
Clean with water and a neutral detergent; outdoors, periodic washing is sufficient. A water repellent limits the formation of stains and moss in shaded areas. Avoid strong acids for descaling.
